St. Joseph's surgical ward is a very busy ward where complicated procedures and emergency situations are handled by well-trained staffs. In this ward we serve adults and children who are hospitalized to receive medicine and treatment or who are staying for recovery from either minor or major surgical procedures. Our surgical ward has up to 64 beds.

St. Joseph's surgical ward staff has a wide variety of trainings and experiences. Because we treat everyone from infants to elderly patients, we encourage our staff to be lifelong learners along with taking classes during Continuous Medical Education meeting organized by the hospital.

At surgical ward we believe that the nurse's kind words, gentle touches, calming smiles, or silent presence makes a real difference in our patients. Nursing care is based upon respect for the dignity and worth of every individual. We believe that each patient has the right to receive quality care based on individual needs and age. Patients and their families are involved in establishing priorities for care that best meet their needs.
SW4
According to the last financial year (July, 2009-June, 2010), Surgical ward admitted 1,578 patients with 22,129 patient days. The bed occupancy rate was 93.75% with the average length of stay of 14 days.

Caesarean sections, Laparotomy, Tracheotomy, Evacuations, Internal fixation and Burr hole are some of the major surgical procedures conducted while the minor surgical procedures include: Dental extractions, Herniorhaphy, Debridement and care of wounds and skin grafting, Incision and drainage of abscesses, Plastic/reconstructive surgery and other minors.

Professionalism, caring, flexibility, and commitment to continuous improvement are key qualities of our staff and the goals of our surgical unit staff are high...to provide efficient, quality, individualized and comprehensive care to all patients as we love and serve with honesty.

ENT UNIT
Ear, Nose and throat (ENT) unit handles conditions affecting the ear, nose and throat. Because of the increasing number of patients with ENT disease affecting the ear, Nose or throat seeking health care in the hospital, the hospital found it necessary to train an ENT specialist clinical officer to handle this aspect of medicine.
Upon finishing training of the ENT Clinical Officer early this year, the Hospital opened up the ENT unit mid February 2011. The unit is now fully operational with the hospital trying to raise funds for acquisition of equipment to ease its work.

The ENT unit is under surgical outpatients' base in OPD. The unit is currently operational and sees approximately Ten (10) patients in a day despite lack of warmers yet on the existence of the unit. We expect these numbers to rise, may be double within 6 months.
